When Doing for God Quietly Replaces Being with God
Many Christian leaders know this feeling, even if they rarely talk about it.
There was a time when their relationship with God felt alive. Prayer was natural. Scripture spoke to their heart. Serving God brought joy and purpose.
Then, almost unnoticed, something changed:
- The responsibilities increased.
- Life became busier
- Ministry, business, family and leadership demanded more and more attention
- The relationship that once gave life slowly became another responsibility.
Many leaders continue serving faithfully, but somewhere deep inside they feel tired, disappointed, and spiritually dry.
They begin to wonder:
- "Where is God?"
- "Why does my faith no longer feel alive?"
- "Why do my prayers seem unanswered?"
This experience is often described as disillusionment.
01 - When Our Expectations Are No Longer Met
Disillusionment usually does not begin because we stop believing in God. It begins because we slowly replace relationship with activity.
We expect our service, our ministry, our knowledge, or our efforts to produce the life that only intimacy with God can produce.
Without realising it, we begin living more from our doing than from our being.
Yet Jesus never invited His disciples simply to work for Him. His first invitation was: "Abide in Me." "I am the vine; you are the branches... apart from Me, you can do nothing." (John 15)
Branches do not struggle to produce fruit.
They simply remain connected to the vine.
02 - A Different Understanding of Spirituality
When our spiritual life becomes dry, many of us assume we need to do more:
- Pray harder
- Study more
- Serve more
- Become more disciplined
While these practices are valuable, they can never replace the relationship they were meant to nurture. The deepest problem is often not a lack of spiritual activity.
It is a misunderstanding of what spiritual life actually is.
The Christian life is not primarily about doing things for God. It is about living in loving communion with God.
We sometimes forget that the Creator of the universe is not merely an all-powerful God. He is a relational Father. Jesus is not simply our Saviour. He calls us His friends. The Holy Spirit is not merely a source of power. He is the Divine Person who continually draws us into the love of the Father and the presence of Christ.
Christianity has always been about relationship before responsibility.
03 - Rediscovering the Presence of God
Relationships cannot survive on information alone. Neither can our relationship with God.
Love grows through time together. Trust grows through presence. Friendship grows through shared moments.
The same is true in our walk with Christ:
- Silence
- Stillness
- Solitude
These are not spiritual techniques. They are simply ways of becoming available to God.
In these quiet moments:
- We stop striving
- We stop producing
- We stop trying to impress God
Instead, we learn once again, to receive His love.
Gradually, the Holy Spirit renews our awareness of God's presence.
Not because our circumstances immediately change, but because we are once again connected to the true source of life:
- Our hearts become quiet
- Our minds become clear
- Our souls find rest

04 - From Disillusionment to Renewal
Many Christian leaders do not need another leadership model. They need their first love restored.
The way forward is surprisingly simple:
- Not more doing
- More being
- Not greater effort
- Greater intimacy
- Not trying harder
Remaining connected to the Vine.
As we repeatedly return to God's presence through silence, stillness and solitude, something beautiful begins to happen:
Faith becomes alive again.
- Prayer becomes conversation instead of obligation.
- Scripture becomes personal instead of merely informative.
- Service flows naturally from love instead of pressure.
And leadership becomes the overflow of a life that is deeply rooted in Christ.

At The Business Lounge, we believe that many Christian leaders are not failing because they lack commitment or ability. They are simply tired.
Tired from carrying responsibilities that were never meant to replace their relationship with God.
Our desire is to create a place where leaders can slow down, rediscover the Father's love, and learn again what Jesus meant when He said,
"Remain in Me."
Because lasting transformation does not begin when we do more for God. It begins when we learn to be with Him again.
It is in His presence that love is renewed, trust is restored, and our dependence on Christ becomes once again the joyful foundation of our lives and leadership.
